Underwater Digital Photography
Underwater Digital Photography is fastly becoming very popular for a lot of people. The fact that it’s easy to use and it’s instantaneous results make it so interesting. Most people think these types of expensive cameras can’t go near water, but that is not so. Pretty soon consumer digital cameras will manufacture small and affordable underwater housing so people can use for recreational diving. An underwater digital camera is the way to go, because any other type of camera won’t do if you plan on doing any underwater digital photography.
What you will need to get started is a small compact consumer digital cameras which store the pictures you take onto a storage card called Compact Flash. With these storage cards you’ll be able to take between 100 and 200 shots, and you can even delete pictures you don’t like while you are still underwater. A PC or Mac is needed to transfer all your photos from the compact flash card to your computer with everything being digital nowadays. The options you have at your disposal with your pictures on your computer are endless. From creating a slideshow on a CD Rom, or getting your favorite underwater picture professionally printed to an enlarged poster, or just simply emailing them to your friends. A graphics program for your computer is also needed if you want to enhance your underwater digital photo to a masterpiece. If you want your underwater digital pictures printed out onto photographic paper then you can either buy a photo printer and print it out yourself, or have your digital photos professionally printed through an online photo company. If you are buying a camera specifically for underwater digital photography, make sure it has underwater housing, an LCD display, and is a 4 to 5 mega pixel camera, for better print quality. This LCD display is needed to compose your shots underwater.
One important point to remember about underwater digital photography is that in the spectrum of light, the colors get filtered out the deeper you dive. So it is best to use flash to produce artificial light to get the colors back into the picture, such as using the internal flash. Make sure you get as close as you can to the subject to reduce the amount of backscatter, which is particles between the lens and the subject. Condensation will also occur if the camera is constantly used and heats up inside the sealed housing. So don’t get too snap happy and by loading your camera into the housing before you reach your destination will reduce condensation to some extent. Other equipment like strobes, macro and wide angle lenses, and arms will make your photography more fine tuned, but it’s best to start with the basic digital photography first. That is all you need to get started in underwater digital photography, and with the convenience and ease of use, there is no excuse to dive right in!
